Blackmagic URSA camera with a new high performance 4.6K sensor. The new Super 35 image sensor features high resolution of 4608 x 2592 at 120 frames per second and an extremely wide 15 stops of dynamic range for images that rival those shot on traditional 35mm film. Files are recorded as 12-bit lossless Cinema DNG RAW to preserve the maximum amount of image data and quality for color correction and creative grading in applications like DaVinci Resolve. Broadcast quality files can also be saved in Apple ProRes for easy post production workflows with minimum storage requirements.

Blackmagic URSA is a new high end digital film camera designed to revolutionize workflow on set. Built to handle the ergonomics of large film crews as well as single person use, URSA has multiple accessories built in, including a massive 10 inch fold out on set monitor, large user upgradable Super 35 global shutter 4K or 4.6K image sensor and internal dual RAW and Apple ProRes recorders. Because the sensor and lens mount assembly can be changed, customers can choose EF or PL lens mounts, and of the two available sensor versions, then upgrade the camera in the future!

Professioanl Features

Blackmagic URSA is designed to be used on high end feature films, commercials, episodic television production, documentaries, electronic news gathering, music videos and more. When used on jobs with a large crew, customers can easily dress the camera with high quality cinema lenses, rails, follow focus, matte boxes and more. With built in scopes for exposure, focus and audio levels, built in dual recorders and the large 10 inch fold out on set monitor, customers can dramatically reduce on set equipment because it’s all built into the camera.

 

The Blackmagic URSA features a larger professional size that has the space for powerful cooling that allows higher frame rates while keeping the chassis cool and the fan quiet. The sleek futuristic machined aluminum design is incredibly strong and has been designed for large film crews while being able to be field upgraded to new sensors by the user. Each area of the camera has been divided into separate DOP, camera assistant and audio engineer work stations. The DOP station features a large 10 inch fold out on set monitor and separate 5 inch screen for settings, camera status and scopes. The camera assist station features a separate screen for camera settings, status and scopes and an audio station features audio meters, controls and audio connections.

Modular Construction!

Blackmagic URSA is a true professional digital film camera with a 4K sensor, global shutter and a wide dynamic range. The wide dynamic range is superior to regular video cameras or even high end broadcast cameras and results in dramatically better images that look like true digital film. The large Super 35 size sensor allows for creative shallow depth of field shooting and high resolution Ultra HD, 12 bit lossless compressed Cinema DNG RAW and Apple ProRes allow for easy post production workflow with minimum storage requirements.

 

The Blackmagic URSA features a modular camera turret that can be simply replaced by removing 4 simple bolts! The camera turret includes the sensor, lens mount and lens control connections and can be upgraded in the future when new types of sensors are developed. There are currently 4 models to choose from, URSA PL supports PL mount lenses and URSA EF supports EF mount lenses from Canon, Zeiss and more. Both of these models include the large Super 35 sized global shutter digital film sensor with a dynamic range of 12 stops. The URSA 4.6K models are fitted with a new sensor capturing 4.6L video with 15 stops of dynamic range and 120 fps.

New High Performance 4.6K Digital Film Sensor

Blackmagic URSA 4.6K models, introduced Q2/Q3 2015, are fitted with a new high performance 4.6K sensor. The new Super 35 image sensor features high resolution of 4608 x 2592 at 120 frames per second and an extremely wide 15 stops of dynamic range for images that rival those shot on traditional 35mm film. This new sensor is available in two new models of the Blackmagic URSA camera, the Blackmagic URSA 4.6K EF and the Blackmagic URSA 4.6K PL model. Existing Blackmagic URSA customers can upgrade to the new 4.6K sensor, replacing the turret on their URSA cameras to upgrade to this new higher performance image sensor. The revolutionary new 4.6K image sensor captures 4608 x 2592 pixels and has an incredibly wide 15 stops of dynamic range to deliver images with higher resolution and more latitude than many traditional motion picture film stocks. The dynamic range sometimes even goes beyond what the human eye can see. That means customers can now use URSA to get the most epic cinematic shots with more detail in the shadows and highlights than ever before.

Frame Rates up to 80 fps in 4K!

The 4K camera also features a special compressed RAW format called RAW 3:1. The format enables to record up to twice as much RAW footage using RAW 3:1 with great quality. For example, you can record about 7 minutes of RAW on a 128 GB CFast card but 14 minutes if you use RAW 3:1. The great thing is that it is still 12-bit RAW. This format is also handy to record high frame rates on URSA up to 80 fps in 4K! To shoot up to 80 fps, users need to use ProRes or the new RAW 3:1 codec. Even at 80 fps using RAW 3:1, users can still record to single CFast card! Versions with the 4.6K sensor support shooting up to 120 fps!

Variable frame rate settings

URSA features two settings: a Project Frame Rate and a Sensor Frame Rate. The Project Frame Rate is the native playback frame rate of the recorded footage and in the standard video frame rates like 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97 and so on. The Sensor Frame Rate sets up how fast the URSA sensor is running and can be selected in 1 frame increments. This makes it really easy to shoot off-speed in camera now. If you set the Sensor Frame Rate to 48 fps and the Project Frame Rate to 24 fps, you’ll end up with a 2x slow motion clip. The great thing about this is that the clip is tagged as a 24 fps clip so you can immediately play the clip back and view the off-speed effect in camera! It also plays back in the desired speed when you import the clip into Resolve without having to manually change any clip properties.
